What documents Americans need to travel in Europe

Posted by Christopher Wink on Nov 5, 2008 in Plans

This might be late-coming, but I got an e-mail from a friend asking what documentation does one need to travel Europe.

Sounds like a post.

Americans don’t need a visa to travel through the 22-member nations of the European Union for three months or less. It helps to have a flight home, though - not having one got us in trouble.

Fortunately, we were meeting Sean’s brothers, who had extended visas here.

For more details, see below some official information from the EU on foreign travel.

Phillies chance at victory, Part 2: what to do in Berlin, Germany

What else could a proud Philadelphian be doing at 1:30 A.M. in Berlin, Germany than watching what’s left of Game Five of the 2008 World Series - a chance at seeing the Phillies beating the Tampa Bay Rays.

Sean has particularly followed closely, despite our international travels.

We had dinner, went out for a few beers, but now we’re getting ready to amble over to a sports bar that will be showing the only American baseball left to be played. Hope you’re tuning in to too.

Why can’t us?

Oh, and Peter Gammons is lame.. and a jerk.

We’re in Berlin, Germany and we haven’t found the Internet… exactly

Posted by Christopher Wink on Oct 27, 2008 in Plans

Sean and I made it to Berlin, Germany this afternoon.

We found the station, our hostel, an ATM, even a world-renowned sex club, but no reliable, wireless Internet.

Some pubs tonight, and - we think - even a chance to watch Game Five of the World Series. Tomorrow, sightseeing, touring, and - we think - some posts and updates.

We say goodbye to Brian: America’s favorite middle child

Posted by Sean Blanda on Oct 23, 2008 in Plans

Although on the surface this may appear to be a two man operation, we have to confess we have a camera man.  And a producer.  And a critic.  And whatever else we need him for.

My brother Brian has been tagging along with us for the middle portion of the journey and has been a great resource for WDSTL. He is kind enough to help out when asked, and has waited patiently as we edit video before sight seeing.

But today, we split paths as he leaves to return home to the States.  We hope when he gets home you guys all make fun of the slight British speaking inflection he has acquired.  He has since been replaced by a tripod.

Here he is getting serious in a night spot in Brussels, Belgium.

Big location changes for WDSTL

Posted by Christopher Wink on Oct 18, 2008 in Plans

We introduced our expected itinerary a couple weeks ago.

Things have changed. For one, right now we’re on a train to Budapest, Hungary - earlier than expected.

We’ve gone from London to Amsterdam to Brussels, to Paris to Lyon to Strausbourg finally to Zurich, from which we left today.

Budapest, Hungary you have no idea

We got to Budapest, Hungary this afternoon and the Eastern Europe bloc is real. Having done nothing but taken a tram from the central station to Pest - the more modern portion of the city - my first reaction is that the Soviet-era part of this historic city is a jewel that could use some polishing.

We walked out of the train station above, which one can immediately tell was sight to be had during its 1950s height. Today, the paint is peeling, the cracks are growing and its age is showing.

WDSTL posts are out of order

Posted by Christopher Wink on Oct 18, 2008 in Plans

Sean and I have both gotten a number of e-mails from viewers wondering what gives with the mixed up order of our location-orientated posts.

London posts while we were in Brussels, Amsterdam videos while we were in Paris.

To answer them, please understand that our access to Internet varies a great deal. While we can usually get to e-mail almost every other day or so - at the least by paying for it at high cost - we can’t always get Internet fast enough to upload video in any timely, efficient or possible manner.

So, when we get a chance, we upload all we can and spread them through the week.

Hope there’s no confusion. Check our map page if you ever want to know exactly where we are at the moment.

Otherwise, I hope you can enjoy and look past the varying locations. We’ll try to keep posts in better order, but bear with us - podcasting on the road at minimal cost comes with challenges to be sure.

Zurich, Switzerland

Posted by Christopher Wink on Oct 15, 2008 in Plans

We are in Zurich, Switzerland - Couchsurfing with a stunning kind and brilliant Serbian, who studied at CalTech and is working at Swiss research institute.

We have reliable Internet but our night of exploration and train travel from Lyon has spent us. WDSTL comes back to life our tomorrow - your night. Must sleep and dream of fondue, Swiss army knives and bank accounts.

Some major changes have happened to our travel plans - like how we’re in Switzerland right now. Will discuss soon.

God bless America.

We’re in Paris, France

Posted by Sean Blanda on Oct 12, 2008 in Plans

Chris, Brian, and I arrived last night via a cramped (but cheap) Euroline bus from Brussels.

If the blog has been looking a little stagnant lately, we apologize.  We have been having some technical difficulties in finding reliable Internet.  Plus, Chris is still learning his technology related French nouns.  We have tonights episode as well as a bunch of new videos to send your way.  Promise.
