Budapest, Hungary you have no idea

We got to Budapest, Hungary this afternoon and the Eastern Europe bloc is real. Having done nothing but taken a tram from the central station to Pest - the more modern portion of the city - my first reaction is that the Soviet-era part of this historic city is a jewel that could use some polishing.

We walked out of the train station above, which one can immediately tell was sight to be had during its 1950s height. Today, the paint is peeling, the cracks are growing and its age is showing.

As a perfect symbol for so many former Communist regimes that have instead embraced capitalism, a glittery shopping mall - as modern as any you’ve been in - sits just 200 hundred meters down the road.

More on this, for sure, later.

Tomorrow, we’re taking a couple hour train ride to Miskolc, the country’s third largest city, situated west of Budapest. It will give me a chance to see Hungary outside of one of the continent’s most trafficked capitals, and give Sean the opportunity to see his other brother, who is studying there.

Then we’re coming back to Budapest for a two-night stay crop full of sight-seeing and havoc-wreaking.

We’re trying to crash with a family in Miskolc, so expect something cool to come of that. For now, back to the cold park - where we’re waiting for someone to beat in basketball or a CouchSurfer to respond to our request for a place to stay, whichever comes first.

I am looking off at the cold-stone of Soviet apartment buildings in Budapest, Hungary. What the hell are you doing?

Plenty more to follow. Any advice or thoughts out there?
