WDSTL dot com: making browsing easier

Posted by Christopher Wink on Dec 19, 2008 in Experiences

Sean and I almost always got the same two responses when we told people the name of our podcast and blog: We Don’t Speak the Language.

They laughed. It was catchy and they remembered it, but, they almost always added, it is long, isn’t it?

Yeah, not only do we have to brand, we have to do it in five words or less. You’re welcome, then.

It is probably among the more clumsy acronyms, but now we own WDSTL.com, so use that for your visiting pleasure.

That’s right, come visit We Don’t Speak the Language at WDSTL.com. Yay short domain names!

Sean and Chris in Stockholm before leaving for the airport to return home on Nov. 4, 2008.

We may have gotten home six weeks ago and completed our last podcast last month, but I am still recovering.

Thus far, WeDontSpeaktheLanguage.com has been home to our video podcast and travel blog, chronicling five weeks backpacking Europe. That portion is done, though a new incarnation of this successful project may be seen.

For now, below, see our most popular and favorite posts and videos. Thanks for following us!

When visiting, how a city isn’t a country

Posted by Christopher Wink on Nov 12, 2008 in Commentary

WDSTL at Tour Eiffel by We Don't Speak The Language.

I haven’t really been to the United Kingdom or England or whatever you’d like to call it. I spent less than a week in London, the country’s most populous city and de facto capital. That doesn’t offer much insight into the English mentality. Come to think of it, five days doesn’t allow me to know much about London itself.

I am on year five living in Philadelphia. I started out in a secluded dormitory for the city’s largest university, before renting out the ground floor of a fine rowhome in the Lower Tioga neighborhood.

I don’t know Philadelphia.

OK, so we weren’t entirely honest.

If you saw our final episode, you know that Sean and I returned.

On Tuesday, Nov. 4, we flew from Stockholm, Sweden to Dusseldorf, Germany before heading across the pond back to Philadelphia.

Social network with us: grow our readership, make Sean feel better about himself

Posted by Christopher Wink on Nov 1, 2008 in Commentary

Sean and Chris in Prague's Old Town Square on Oct. 25, 2008.

We’ve gotten a few e-mails from viewers that made us realize that perhaps we weren’t clear.

We have way too much content to sensibly place all on this blog. So if you’re itching for more WDSTL, then let us scratch it - or something like that.

Lots of extra videos get uploaded, so subscribe to our Youtube channel and like totally be our friend. Speaking of which, it is so crazy that you aren’t a fan of ours on Facebook or friends with us on MySpace.

Follow our Flickr photostream and see our best photos. If you have an account, friend us and follow our travels that way, too.

Make us feel better about ourselves, and, more importantly help us grow our readership.

Big location changes for WDSTL

Posted by Christopher Wink on Oct 18, 2008 in Plans

We introduced our expected itinerary a couple weeks ago.

Things have changed. For one, right now we’re on a train to Budapest, Hungary - earlier than expected.

We’ve gone from London to Amsterdam to Brussels, to Paris to Lyon to Strausbourg finally to Zurich, from which we left today.

WDSTL posts are out of order

Posted by Christopher Wink on Oct 18, 2008 in Plans

Sean and I have both gotten a number of e-mails from viewers wondering what gives with the mixed up order of our location-orientated posts.

London posts while we were in Brussels, Amsterdam videos while we were in Paris.

To answer them, please understand that our access to Internet varies a great deal. While we can usually get to e-mail almost every other day or so - at the least by paying for it at high cost - we can’t always get Internet fast enough to upload video in any timely, efficient or possible manner.

So, when we get a chance, we upload all we can and spread them through the week.

Hope there’s no confusion. Check our map page if you ever want to know exactly where we are at the moment.

Otherwise, I hope you can enjoy and look past the varying locations. We’ll try to keep posts in better order, but bear with us - podcasting on the road at minimal cost comes with challenges to be sure.

Zurich, Switzerland

Posted by Christopher Wink on Oct 15, 2008 in Plans

We are in Zurich, Switzerland - Couchsurfing with a stunning kind and brilliant Serbian, who studied at CalTech and is working at Swiss research institute.

We have reliable Internet but our night of exploration and train travel from Lyon has spent us. WDSTL comes back to life our tomorrow - your night. Must sleep and dream of fondue, Swiss army knives and bank accounts.

Some major changes have happened to our travel plans - like how we’re in Switzerland right now. Will discuss soon.

God bless America.
