Belgium’s best travel guide: Use-it

Posted by Sean Blanda on Oct 13, 2008 in Travel Tips |

Although we are not that far into our journey, we started to feel that we have exhausted the standard travel resources out there. We utilized couch surfing, cling to our lonely plant guide, and ask the locals as about as much as possible. In a few select European cities, including Brussels, Use-It may very be your new best friend. Use-It is smaller non-profit version of your big travel guides with extra information from locals, and will quickly become the most useful name you know.

When we first arrived in our hostel we were handed a low budget hand drawn map designed as if a local and quickly penciled over our tourist version. We often thumb through these brochures and quickly toss them aside as our budget doesn’t exactly involve that €30 museum. This piece of paper quickly became our bible as we found the best frites joint, enjoyed the world famous Belgian waffles, and managed to locate a pissing statue. While a lot of guide boast that they are for the budget traveler, the Use-It guide truely capture the low budget ethos. Nearly every activity is under €10 with important bus and metro lines outlined. They also offer general local tips such as “Buy Belgian choclate in the uspermarkets like the locals, it’s cheaper and it’s the same thing.”

If the map isn’t personal enough for you, you can visit the Use-It offices in the city center where Marie will treat you to free coffee, free internet acess, and lots of free advice. She pointed us in the right direction to getting a cheapt hotel is Paris and informed us about the magic of Euroline busses.
