What to do when you arrive in a new city

A well balanced meal is key to a good day's travel

We are fortunate enough to have just arrived at city number six.  That’s one bus, one plane, and four train rides if my count is correct. While each city has it’s own quarks and character our routine of getting oriented and finding where we are staying remains the same.  Here is what we do to make sure that our travel days are smooth ones:

Two nights before:

  • Research the train ride we will take using the Eurail timetable.  Determine if the train needs a reservation and find the name of the train station we will be arriving at.
  • Look up how long the ride is expected to take to we can maximize our time in every city.

One night before:

  • Get at least two places we can stay and chart them on Google Maps.
  • If there is a public transportation system, find the easiest way to get from the train station to the hostel/hotel.
  • Save the Google Map image on the hard drive of our laptop so we do not need internet to find our way.
  • Write down the address of the hostels just in case we need to ask a local for directions.
  • Charge all cameras and laptops and empty all pictures and video so we start completely fresh.
  • Look in our trusty Lonely Planet guide for any specific activities our sites we can do on the way to the hostel.

Morning of:

  • Pack our bags, keeping a separate “entertainment” bag for long waits at the train station and lengthy train rides.
  • Hit the road!
